This is one of six sites (Arrowwood, Grindler, Kunze, McMillan, Wannamaker, and Lyter) that are production apiaries with about 40 colonies each. Colony performance is being monitored as part of a USDA Area Wide Investigation by Dr. Jeff Pettis and others. Detailed information is not included here for privacy considerations.
Hives:
Colonies are managed for honey production, and are in commercial Langstroth 10 frame equipment. Telescoping covers were used in 2011 and 2012 (2 hives/apiary). Colonies were installed on USDA/NASA electronic scales and the data here are averaged daily gain of edited records within the apiary.
Forage:
The colonies are located in the Prairie Pot Hole region, and forage consists primarily of native forbs, some of which are bee friendly crops.
