Site/Hive Description:

Terraced area in cove on sloped hillside. Extreme mountainous terrain at elevation of 2900 feet. Very good forage of Tulip Poplar, Sourwood and Sumac trees and clover. Front of all hives face ESE with wind block on north side of hives. Colder than surrounding area, with later first honey flow beginning approximately early May.

Hive is 10 frame Langstroff. Started with single deep adding additional deeps as 7/10 frames filled. New Italian packages installed 5 April, 2008 on ten frames of drawn foundation. Will add supers approximately April 20, 2008. All weights recorded will correct for added supers and deeps. Will be reporting weights from two colonies.

Scale is electronic portable scale (Beta product design). 0 to 300lbs range, accuracy +/-3lbs absolute, +/-1.0lbs relative. Resolution 1.0 lb.

The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is the ratio of the  difference between visible (red) and infra-red (IR) wavebands to the sum of these bands. 

NDVI = nir - red / nir + red

 NDVI provides an indication of the amount and vigor of vegetated  surfaces. 

 NDVI has been widely used with multiple generations of satellite data.


 The Enhnaced Vegetation Index (EVI) is a more complicated combination of wavebands compared to the more widely used index, NDVI.  The advantage of this newer index is improved sensitivity in high biomass regions and reduction in atmospheric influences.
pNIR = NIR reflectance
pRed = red reflectance
pBlue = blue reflectance
C1 = atmosphere resistance red correction coefficient
C2 = atmosphere resistance blue correction coefficient
L = canopy background brightness
G = gain factor

The MODIS sensor on the Terra satellite platform provides us with 16-day composite measures of NDVI/EVI throughout the year.  NASA distributes MODIS data from many of their distributed data centers.
