Site/Hive Description:

The hive is located in the backyard, approx. 300 ft beyond house along a tree line wind break. Located in an agricultural area, hive is near a cornfield about 500 ft from the road. Full southern exposure, with lots of snow in the winter. Minimum temps to -20 F/-29 C. Season runs approx. Apr-Oct. There is a significant second flow in fall. Zone 5, mixed conifer/hardwood forest.
Hive is standard Langstroth design: Three deeps, 10 frame, Pierco black plastic for brood area. Supers are mediums, 9 frame, Pierco white plastic.
Colony consists of New World Carniolans (Strachan Queen), second year.

Scale is old, unknown, Fairbanks-style platform, est. 500 - 1000 lb. capacity, platform 15 x 20 in. with 0.5 lb. increments. Scale is leveled on pressure treated wooden base, upper portion covered, otherwise exposed. Unit was wire brushed and painted with Krylon Fusion.

Forage is clover, dandelion, honeysuckle in Spring/Summer and goldenrod, aster in the fall.

MODIS Subset Data (from the ORNL DAAC)
Red dots are the average of all pixels with acceptable quality (see landcover extract below for area covered).
Blue dots are the center pixel only (point is not plotted if the pixel is of unacceptable quality).

The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is the ratio of the  difference between visible (red) and infra-red (IR) wavebands to the sum of these bands.

NDVI = nir - red / nir + red

 NDVI provides an indication of the amount and vigor of vegetated  surfaces.

 NDVI has been widely used with multiple generations of satellite data.

 The Enhnaced Vegetation Index (EVI) is a more complicated combination of wavebands compared to the more widely used index, NDVI.  The advantage of this newer index is improved sensitivity in high biomass regions and reduction in atmospheric influences.
pNIR = NIR reflectance
pRed = red reflectance
pBlue = blue reflectance
C1 = atmosphere resistance red correction coefficient
C2 = atmosphere resistance blue correction coefficient
L = canopy background brightness
G = gain factor

The MODIS sensor on the Terra satellite platform provides us with 16-day composite measures of NDVI/EVI throughout the year.  NASA distributes MODIS data from many of their distributed data centers.
