The apiary is located in suburban Kent a short distance from the Cuyahoga River. The landscape contains lawns, gardens, and mixed tree cover.

The hive consisted of 3 deep 10 frame hive bodies, and 4 honey supers in August 2011. The queen is a second year survivor stock queen of uncertain lineage. It faces south, and is shaded during spring and summer by raspberries which direct flight to the north.

The Howe scale has .25 lb divisions on a leveled platform of 4x4 stock, and is exposed to the weather.
Forage:
Principal forage is from tulip poplar, black locust, linden, sweet clover, goldenrod and aster.
